 String is a Swedish design firm that was born in 1952, produces modular shelves designed by the Swedish architect Nils Strinning, one of the leading designers of the mid-twentieth century and who built the foundations of Scandinavian design. 

 

Nils "Nisse" Strinning (1917-2006) studied architecture from 1940 to 1947 in Stockholm, and during his studies he designed his first String object .

 

In 1949,  Strinning took part in a competition organised by the Swedish publisher Bonnier, which sought to achieve a shelf that was not only practical and cheap, but also light and easy to assemble. Strinnig entered  the contest and achieved one of his greatest successes. Nils Strinning, together with his wife Kajsa, worked in detail to meet all the demands of the competition and designed a shelf that was easy to assemble and could be shipped simply and cheaply thanks to reduced packaging. Nils and Kajsa Strinning won first place with this lightweight but very stable shelf that could be expanded with new shelves and metal supports in all directions. This is how theStringshelf  was born.
